"I think in general, most people tend not to be aware of what goes on in Indian Country...the inter-generational cycle of violence, the role that historical trauma plays in perpetuating that cycle, the lack of infrastructure and resources that are attributable to the fact that most of these communities are in very geographically isolated areas. There’s very little economic development and there’s difficulty in maintaining a consistent law enforcement response to crimes that are committed there.

So all those issues just sort of converge in Indian Country and create challenges providing services to victims of crime...I think that if people were aware of the level of violence and victimization that goes on in Indian Country, they would be shocked."

“...remember the ladies, and be more generous and favorable to them than your ancestors. Do not put such unlimited power into the hands of the Husbands. Remember all Men would be tyrants if they could. If particular care and attention is not paid to the Ladies we are determined to foment a Rebellion, and will not hold ourselves bound by any Laws in which we have no voice, or Representation.”

to get women where they are today in this country. I don't know how much history
young women today know about these battles."
